Revising the Poems

Next lesson, you will begin planning your assessment in which you will compare two of the poems you have studied this term. This lesson, you should therefore answer the following questions in relation to each of the four poems and support each answer with quotations from the poem:

• Charge of the Light Brigade
• The Soldier
• A Life is a Life
• Big Ask

1) What is the poem about?
2) How does the poet feel?
3) Why do they feel this way?
4) What do we learn about their attitude to war from the poem?

Homework due Tuesday:

How do the poets of “The Soldier” and “A Life is a Life” show their feelings?

Independent Presentations on "Big Ask"

• Create a presentation which you will record on the chroma keyer
• You should include the following:

What is the context of the poem- why was it written?
What is it about?
How does the poet feel?
How is language used to show these feelings?

"A Life is a Life" and "The Soldier"

Today's lesson is highly appropriate, falling as it does shortly after Armistice day. This is a day on which the world stops to remember those who have died in war, not just the soldiers, but the civillians who are caught up in the conflict. Your task is to write a comment on this post explaining how your research into the contexts of "The Soldier" and "A Life is a Life" has helped you better understand the poems.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Read the poem and highlight and label any examples of poetic devices which you can find. Then, write as many comments on this post as you can which include the following:

1) Quotation which uses a poetic device
2) Name of poetic device
3) Effect achieved by quotation

Don't forget to include your name on each post. There will be rewards for the people who post the most good responses.

Your task is to write an eyewitness account of the events which led to the following picture being taken:



Working in a group of five, you will take on one of the following roles:
1) An American soldier
2) An American general
3) A local farmer
4) The 5 year old daughter of a farmer
5) A British journalist
