"A Life is a Life" and "The Soldier"

Today's lesson is highly appropriate, falling as it does on Armistice day. This is a day on which the world stops to remember those who have died in war, not just the soldiers, but the civillians who are caught up in the conflict. Your task is to write a comment on this post explaining how your research into the contexts of "The Soldier" and "A Life is a Life" has helped you better understand the poems.

  1. In 'A life is a life' the author is better about anyone being killed at all during war, regardless of where they're from.

  2. A life is a life is about the Gaza war (2008-2009) and in the poem soldier was written 1 year before The poet (Rupert Brooke) died.

    A life is a life

Marguerite Rami wrote this poem for the soldiers who are fighting in a war. She wants to tell them how she feels about the situation they are in and what she thinks they should do about it.

It has helped us understand the poems more because we got to look on the internet. We got to look up 5 questions of which we wanted to ask the poet if we wanted to meet them. This is helped us understand it because we understand the context of the peom and understand what they are refering to. and we got to look up what we wanted to know.

  7. in 'The Soldier' the author got his inspiration from his uncle, a story that his uncle said "if i were to die, i would like to die proud, and for people to remember me".

  9. We found out when the poems were written which helped us understand some of the intentions of the poets and the affects the poems might have had on the audiences. Our research also helped us to understand how the poems are different and how they are similar.

  11. My understanding of the poem "a life is a life" has changed because I now understand the phrase "split Gaza into 3". It is about when Israel invaded Gaza in 2009 and split it into 3 sections

  12. Rupert Brooke wrote this poem (the solider) in England in WW1, he was soon to be shipped out to France to fight. Rupert Brooke wishes to express his feelings about soliders going out and fighting on the front line and how those soldiers should be remembered.

I know now that "a life is a life" written by Marguerite Rami is about the Israeli assaut on Gaza in 2009. This helps me understand what inpact it had on people living in Gaza and to realize that it was not that long ago!!.

  15. The soldier was written in 1914 just after the war broke out. The soldier is a sonnet. It was part of a series of sonnets by Rupert Brooke. Brooke wrote it to sybolise a typical soldier's view. The thoughts are a fact because many soldiers thought this

  17. My Understanding of the poem “the soldier” has changed when I found out about the poem when doing research. The poem was written in 1914 and the author wrote it to show how he is feeling and how he wants people who die in the war to be remembered for who they are. The poem explains how he feels about war.

  18. Rupert Brooke was born in 1887 and he wrote "The Soldier" in 1914 in the first world war and the first world war was a gory and tragic event. Which makes you think of all the possibilities that the moral of the poem could have.

  19. The soldier by Rupert Brooke

My view of this poem has changed significantly after completing brief research into the contexts. This poem was written in 1914, the time of the First World War. This was a time where patriotism was perhaps more commonly portrayed than the present day. This there for justifies the deep glory and pride Rupert Brooke portrays throughout this inspirational poem. This explains why his view is more positive than it would be today as he would be trying to encourage people to go to war and fight for their country.

  20. Well i think this poem is about annihilation, which means, killing to survive. The author here is saying that, even if he dies in the war, he would be able to save his country. His country will be resembled by him and the soldeirs who died for their country. This way he will be living in his country symbolicly.
